British-Bangladeshi, UAE-born, Londoner Shama Rahman is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and a multi-genre, multi-cultural singer, a scientist, neuro‐philosopher and actor. She has received an Emerging Excellence Award (Help Musicians), been commissioned by composer's residency 'Take V' (Serious) and Snape Maltings, Sky Arts Scholarship and Artangel finalist. Her latest album was successfully recorded and toured with a mixture of crowdfunding and the UK’s Arts Council.
She performs with her electro-acoustic band with live Sitar, uniquely taking it out of the traditional context, across genres including jazz, live electronics, psychaedelia, afro latin worldbeats & Indian/Western melodies. Her stories start life as poems and take flight as cross-genre songs. Poetic music - with a whole heap of energy! Her music has been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Songlines, Wonderland, Arts Desk and the BBC, and international radio and TV.
She has played extensively at international world, jazz and beats festivals, and throughout the UK, notably Glastonbury, the London and Manchester Jazz Festivals, BoomTown, Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Green Man, Shambhala. Internationally, she has performed in South Korea, Canada, Hungary, Germany, France, Croatia, and Bangladesh.
